Buying a Puppy

Useful advice

  • Read the Leonberger Club code of ethics and ask the breeder if they comply.
  • Be knowledgeable about the breed. Be aware of their advantages and disadvantages.
  • Pups should be confident, mischievous, appealing and curious
  • Breeders should be keen to know about your circumstances
  • Breeders should offer assistance should your domestic circumstances change.
  • Visit the litter and watch the interaction between the mother and her pups and if possible see the Sire
  • Temperament is an important characteristic to note in the Sire and the Dam - as it will give an indication as to how their offspring may develop.
  • Conformation of the Sire and the Dam will give an indication as to the conformation of any offspring.
  • Check the pups skin, coat (clean & shiny), and general health.
  • The breed standard ask for "an amenable, intelligent, fearless companion" - is this what you are observing in the Sire and the Dam
  • Checkout the breeding on the database links on this site.

Sample questions to consider asking.

  • Ask are there any inherited medical conditions?
  • Ask to see hip and elbow scores and check that eyes are clear of disease (cataracts). Hip scores for the breed is around 12 and the total scores should be less than 25.  Elbows ideally should be 0, but 1 is acceptable. Eyes need to be checked annually.
  • Ask about previous litters and if possible go to see siblings.
  • Go to a reputable breeder who has the leonberger type you like and has experience producing quality stock.
  • Ask the breeder for dietary information and contact details for after-sale support. (This is usually standard)
