Owning a Leo - this is a leo owners perspective

Leos are big, lively and fun loving.  From puppy hood to adulthood they will need consistent, patient and firm training, but the more you put in, the more you will be rewarded in devotion and loyalty.

Bringing your Leo for a walk, you will be stopped numerous times by astounded passers-by wanting a cuddle and asking questions like "Wow what breed is that?"  or "Do you have a huge house and garden?"  I never get tired of answering the same questions and seeing the amazed look on people's faces when I tell them that I live in a normal house with a moderately sized garden. This is part of the fun of owing a Leo and your dog will adore all the attention.

One thing to remember when walking your young Leo is to be careful of their growing joints.  I stuck to the 5 minutes per month of life rule, i.e. 5 months old = 25 minute walk etc.

The needs of a Leonberger are quite simple.  Other than the training, which is a given and is required of any breed, the basic needs of a Leonberger are your time, your patience and your love. Leos want to be wherever you are and will adapt extremely well to every situation.  Once socialised from a young age nothing much phases them.

Leonbergers have beautiful thick double coats that shed twice a year.  This coat will take some moderate grooming all year round. If you start introducing your Leo to grooming from an early age they will come to adore it.
